How the kraft Paper Making Machine Works?

This is the process of converting softwood to wood pulp that is used to make the Kraft paper. The first stage of the kraft paper manufacturing process is impregnation. In this stage, the wood chips are cut to sizes between 12-25 millimeters long and between 2-10 millimeters in thickness. Here, the chips are pre-steamed. The cavities inside the fresh wood chips are filled partly with liquid and air. The steam in the cavity causes air to expand. The excess air is expelled from the chips. Using black and white liquor, the chips are saturated. This liquor functions as a method of trapping air into the chip. When this impregnation stage is done properly rejects are minimized and the process is homogeneous.

After impregnation, the wood chips are put into the digester where they are cooked. The cooking can be done in batches or continuously depending on the type of machine used. The cooking allows for the production of solid pulp because the hemicelluloses and lignin are degraded. The fragments are thus soluble in strong basic liquid.

In the next step, the excess black liquor is put into the multiple effect evaporator. The concentration of black liquor causes the rising of the rosin soap which is them skimmed off and processed to make tail oil. The removal of the rosin soap allows for easier evaporation. In the recovery boiler, the black liquor is burned to allow for the recovery of chemicals that can be reused in the pulping process. The next step is the separation of pulp to dirt, shives, knots and debris. What remains in this process is the pulp. The materials separated from the pulp are what are known as rejects. The brown-stick go to the washing stages where the cooking liquors are separated from the fibers of the cellulose. The fibers then undergo the bleaching process where they colors are changed depending on the color of the Kraft paper needed.
