2009 Christmas Basket, Gifts Project

Your 2009 Mission Team worked hard on projects all through the year.  The most recent was the yearly Christmas Basket and Gift Project.  Names of families were taken when the hoodies were distributed earlier in the fall.  People also came to the church and filled out applications for food baskets and gifts.  In all the Mission Team prepared baskets for 91 families of various sizes, from families of one to families of ten.  That number included gifts for 157 children.

We thought you might like to have some idea of the amount of groceries that our church purchases to fill the baskets (boxes) so those in need may have a good Christmas.  Larger families, of course, got larger boxes.  The list is as follows:

Instant Potatoes                               91 boxes

Soda Crackers                                 91 boxes

Spaghetti (2 lbs)                               91 boxes

Margarine (1 lb)                                91 pounds

Cake Mix (2 Layer)                           91 boxes

Frosting Mix                                     91 cans

Green Beans                                    147 cans

Canned Tomatoes                            131 cans

Canned Chili Beans                          131 cans

Apple Sauce (25 oz jar)                    101 jars

Peanut Butter (18 oz)                        101 jars

Gravy Mix Packets                           101 packets

Instant Oatmeal Packets                    117 boxes

Baby Carrots (l lb bag)                     117 bags

American Cheese Slices (12 oz)        101 packages

Spaghetti Sauce (28 oz jar)               120 jars

Vegetable Soup canned                    189 cans

Apples (3 lb bag)                             101 bags

Bread (1 lb, whole wheat)                 143 loaves

1 lb Frozen Hamburger                     143 pounds

Ham (2.5 pound each)                      143 hams (360 pounds)

$5.00 certificate for dairy products    101 certificates

The total cost of the groceries was $ 3, 305.74.  That’s quite an achievement for a church the size of ours.  We have done this for many years and hope to continue doing it in years to come.  Thank you, each and everyone for all you do to make this succeed.  On the day of distribution we received many "Thank Yous" from grateful recipients.

Below you will see pictures taken the day the baskets and gifts were distributed.

Dave and Janet

Dave and Janet White play a huge role in the Christmas Basket Project.  They make sure the boxes are wrapped, the groceries are purchased, and each box is filled.

Early in the morning on the day of distribution Mission Team members make sure each basket has exactly what is needed.

May Mission projects

During the month of May the  Mission Team distributed checks of $250.00 each to the food pantries at First Baptist Church and Living Hope Mission.  Members of the congregation also gave a "shower" for Spoon River Pregnancy Resource Center.  Items such as diapers, clothing and other things needed for an infant were collected and delivered, along with a check for $250.00.
